Aliso Viejo, CA - The Internet Solutions Division of Smith Micro Software, Inc. (Nasdaq: SMSI) announced today that its WebCatalog web publishing solution is powering a complex build-your-own-tool site for Gerber Legendary Blades®, enabling customers to quickly design and order a Gerber Multi-Plier® multi-purpose tool in any of nearly 8,000 permutations. Fiskars Consumer Products, Inc., Gerber's parent company, has also used WebCatalog to build four other sites and has selected it as the platform of choice for future web projects for many of it's over 40 international divisions.
"The Build-Your-Own Gerber site was Fiskars first venture in developing an e-commerce site completely from the ground up," said Jeff Kohn, Information Technology Administrator for Fiskars Consumer Products. "We needed a solution that would allow us to create an intricate product customization site fast and under budget, while maintaining full control of the site's look and feel. WebCatalog allowed Fiskars to deliver a great looking user-friendly site and integrate it with a legacy EDI system at Gerber's manufacturing facility located nearly 2000 miles away. We were able to have it up in less than six weeks, just in time for the busy holiday season."
Gerber's build-your-own Multi-Plier® site, http://www.byo.gerberblades.com, permits users to customize a tool with their choice of handle color, jaw style, tool finish, carrying pouch and dozens of different combinations of components, ranging from knives, screwdrivers and scissors to wirecutters, files, crimpers and even a hoofpick for horses. Since Gerber Multi-Pliers® were previously available only in seven pre-built configurations, the new site is generating new business from customers unable to meet their specific needs with the stock models.
Fiskars selected WebCatalog to power the site primarily because of its fast development capabilities, eCommerce functionality, and a high-speed internal database capable of producing near-instantaneous responses when customers are designing tools on the fly. The company also embraced WebCatalog because it supports the Macintosh web servers used at the Fiskars Consumers Product Group headquarters in Madison, Wisconsin, and provides an easy interface with Gerber's manufacturing database in Portland, Oregon.
"WebCatalog's WebDNA development language is so simple that a function that might take three pages of code in another program takes only three lines," said Matt Helbing, the Fiskars web designer who managed the project. "At the same time, WebCatalog has the flexibility and open architecture that other server toolkits with similar ease of use don't have. That's why we've adopted it as our toolkit of choice for future projects."
In addition to the build-your-own Gerber site, Fiskars has used WebCatalog to build the main web site for Gerber Legendary Blades® (http://www.gerberblades.com) as well as sites for Enviroworks (http://www.enviroworks.com), a subsidiary that makes patio shades, and Royal Floor Mats (http://www.royalfloormats.com), a division that manufactures door mats. Smith Micro's product was also used to create a lawn and garden site promoting Fiskars complete line of gardening tools (http://www.gardening.fiskars.com).
Fiskars also is using WebCatalog to manage data for several internal company functions, including a project management system, company newscenter, and other large-scale intranet applications.
"The wide range of applications for which Fiskars is using WebCatalog demonstrates the versatility and adaptability of the product," said Chris Lippincott, General Manager of the Internet Solutions Division of Smith Micro Software. "It's a robust engine for online stores, but it also handles everything from shipment tracking to date- and time-sensitive functions like event calendars and games aimed at getting users to return to a website. It does much more than eCommerce."
WebCatalog is a comprehensive eCommerce and web publishing toolkit that includes a dynamic web publishing engine, a built-in database that is designed to optimize retrieval speeds, and industry standard support for ODBC to connect to other database engines, such as Microsoft SQL Server. It is administered entirely over the web, enabling users to make new information available on their sites immediately. It permits development and deployment on Windows 95/98/NT/2000, Macintosh or UNIX platforms and works with existing web servers.
Fiskars Inc. is a diversified global corporation that markets a wide range of consumer products, including the well-known Fiskars brand of scissors. Founded in 1649, it is the oldest industrial company in Finland. For more information, visit http://www.fiskars.com.
