Smith Micro Signs First Cable Service Bundle Agreement with Convergence.com for Internet CommSuite

Oct 06, 1998
Convergence.com will provide all-in-one Web communications package to cable TV companies for use as a value-added enhancement to its data cable service offerings

ALISO VIEJO, CA - Smith Micro Software, Inc. (Nasdaq: SMSI) today announced an agreement with Convergence.com, an Atlanta, Georgia-based cable service company that provides complete data cable infrastructures to cable TV companies. Through this pact, Convergence.com will now provide Smith Micro's new Internet CommSuiteTM to cable TV companies for use as a value-added enhancement to its data cable service offerings.

This new agreement will give Convergence.com's customers access to an all-in-one Internet communications package with advanced broadband features that will allow data cable subscribers to take full advantage of high-speed cable modems. With Internet CommSuite, subscribers will be able to easily phone and fax via their PC over the Internet bypassing long-distance phone charges, add audio and video to their e-mails, conduct video phone-calls, add sound and full-motion video to their chat sessions, and more. Internet CommSuite is the first product to bring all those functions together under a single easy-to-use interface, eliminating the need to buy, install and learn different programs.

"Bundling Smith Micro's Internet CommSuite enables us to provide cable TV companies with additional value that they can pass on to data cable customers," said Terry Wright, Chief Technology Officer for Convergence.com. "We are particularly impressed by the level of integration offered by the software, as it effectively provides all of the communications functionality that today's PC users require, in a single easy-to-use package."

Convergence.com has already formalized an agreement with Coastside Cable of Half Moon Bay, California, under which Convergence is providing Coastside a turnkey data cable solution that includes Internet bandwidth, a cable modem, and Internet CommSuite. Coastside is now in the process of promoting this packaged solution to prospective customers via direct mail and cable TV advertisements.

"Internet CommSuite will provide our customers with the best of what high-speed Internet access has to offer, in one simple-to-use format," said Tony Iacopi, VP/Director of Operations for Coastside Cable TV, Inc. "Many new customers will now be able to utilize their service to a much higher degree, and this adds great value to our offering."

Convergence.com also has agreements in place with a number of other cable operators regarding its data cable product and service offerings, and expects to announce additional agreements shortly.

"Internet CommSuite is ideally suited to meet Convergence.com's needs because it was designed specifically to take advantage of the high-speed capabilities of broadband technologies," said William W. Smith, Jr., Smith Micro's President and CEO. "By combining our software with its high-speed broadband Internet access, Convergence.com is now able to provide even greater value to the various cable providers that it serves."
