Enterprise-Level Capabilities of Mac OS X Will Give Added Power to WebCatalog Users; WebCatalog for Mac OS X to be Released When New OS Ships
Aliso Viejo, Ca - The Internet Solutions Division of Smith Micro Software, Inc. (Nasdaq: SMSI), a developer and marketer of a wide range of software and service solutions for the wireless and Internet markets, today announced that its WebCatalog eCommerce and dynamic web publishing software will support Mac OS X, Apple's next generation operating system, upon its commercial release. The availability of a Mac OS X-compatible version of WebCatalog will benefit the large community of developers who prefer to build and deploy web systems on the Mac platform. A beta version of the WebCatalog update is available from Smith Micro now.
The company will demonstrate the product at Macworld 2001 in San Francisco January 9-13. Smith Micro released a beta version of WebCatalog and has been testing the product on Mac OS X Public Beta.
"A significant portion of WebCatalog users both develop and deploy their work on the Mac platform, so it was a high priority for us to move to Mac OS X in order to give them immediate access to the Mac's newest capabilities," said William W. Smith, Jr., President and CEO of Smith Micro. "With the new Mac operating system, our users will have all the strength of an open-source, Unix-like platform at their fingertips without having to learn Unix or invest in an expensive server to deploy their work. This is a great leap forward for the web community."
"Mac OS X's open source foundation, advanced standards based networking, and superior performance make it an ideal platform for web development and deployment," said Clent Richardson, Apple's vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations. "We're thrilled to see Smith Micro bring WebCatalog to Mac OS X, so that developers can immediately leverage the advanced technologies of our new operating system."
In addition to the WebCatalog upgrade, Smith Micro is also planning to release Mac OS X versions of its VideoLink Pro videoconferencing solution and its enormously popular FAXstf, the #1 fax program for the Mac platform.
WebCatalog is a flexible solution for eCommerce and dynamic web publishing and is the engine behind many online stores now on the Web. Utilizing existing web server software, WebCatalog provides web developers the ability to quickly design and operate an unlimited number of sophisticated online storefronts with integrated order management and payment authorization support. Simple scripting language and broad functionality permit rapid development of a wide range of commerce and non-commerce-related features without low-level coding.
WebCatalog's StoreBuilder Wizard enables users to instantly create shopping cart functionality, upload graphics, edit product placement, change pricing information, add product options such as size and color, alter the look and feel of a store, select payment processors and perform a wide variety of other functions-all from a browser. Novices can build online stores with no programming, and more experienced designers can use the free extensions offered for Macromedia's Dreamweaver HTML Editor to ease custom development of more complex sites. External systems, such as legacy accounting systems, can be integrated through WebCatalog's support for ODBC and SQL.
