William W. Smith, Jr.
President and Chief Executive Officer
Bill is co-founder of Smith Micro Software and has served as Chairman of the Board, President and Chief Executive Officer since its inception in 1982. Prior to Smith Micro, he was employed by Rockwell International Corporation in a variety of technical and management positions from 1975 to 1984. Before that, Bill served with Xerox Data Systems from 1972 to 1975, and RCA Computer Systems Division from 1969 to 1972 in mainframe sales and pre-sale technical roles. He received his B.A. in Business Administration from Grove City College.
Senior Vice President of Engineering
Rick is Senior Vice President of Engineering having joined the company in May of 2009. Prior to joining Smith Micro, Rick served as a Vice President of Engineering at NextWave Wireless where he was responsible for WiMAX chipset development. From 2000 to 2005, he was Director of Software Engineering for CDMA products at AirPrime, which was ultimately acquired by Sierra Wireless. Rick has also held engineering management positions at Motorola and DENSO Wireless . He holds a BS in Computer Science from the University of Texas, Permian Basin and studied Masters-level Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Texas Arlington.
Chief Marketing Officer
Carla is the Chief Marketing Officer. As a 24-year veteran of the technology industry, she has held executive positions in marketing, product management, technical sales and business development. Prior to Smith Micro, Carla was Vice President of marketing for Bitfone, a pioneer in mobile device management, subsequently acquired by HP. Recently, she was Vice President of Marketing at WebVisible, which provides a search advertising platform for small businesses through resellers such as AT&T and BT. Carla has been instrumental in developing market-leading brands and thought-leadership programs for a variety of large and small enterprise software companies, such as LogicalApps (Governance, Risk & Compliance software, acquired by Oracle), Quest Software (Application Development, Management & Performance software), Octave Software (Web Content Management) and CA (formerly Computer Associates, Systems & Network Management software). She holds a B.A. degree in Economics and Computer Studies from Claremont McKenna College, and sits on the Board of Advisors for the UC Irvine Marketing Extension program.
Senior Vice President of Global Operations
Chris is Senior Vice President of Global Operations. He joined Smith Micro in 1993 as a senior sales representative and later held several sales positions. In 1998, Chris was appointed Director of North American Sales and in 2000 named General Manager of the Internet Solutions Division. Subsequently, he became Vice President of Internet Software and Services Sales. Prior to joining Smith Micro, Chris held several retail sales positions. He attended the University of California at Berkeley majoring in business administration.
Chief Strategy Officer
Jim is the Chief Strategy Officer. He is responsible for corporate strategy development, planning, and execution initiatives, as well as global business development and strategic alliances to help chart new opportunities for Smith Micro. Since joining Smith Micro in 2009, Jim has worn several hats (Senior Vice President of Products, Solution Engineering, Support, and Program Management) where he focused on innovation and transformation. Prior to joining Smith Micro, Jim held executive/management positions at Openwave Systems, EMC Corporation, IBM Management Consulting, and several management positions in the Aerospace Industry. He is a seasoned business and technology executive with extensive experience in Telecom and Media industry segments. With a proven track record of profitably growing businesses in highly competitive product and service markets, Jim balances solution innovation with a results driven/performance management approach that focuses on strategy planning, execution, delivery, and customer satisfaction.
Jim earned his BS in Mechanical Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University and MS in Interactive Technology and Psychology (AI focus) at the University of Southern California with additional course work at the Wharton School of Business.
Chief Revenue Officer
Dan is the Chief Revenue Officer. He joined Smith Micro as Chief Strategy Officer in late 2012, overseeing Corporate Development, Business Development, Channels & Alliances. In June 2013, Dan assumed the position of Chief Revenue Officer, with responsibility for all revenue streams and customer management functions. Dan brings a successful 25-year track record of sales and executive management experience with leading software companies such as Oracle, Peoplesoft, Lawson Software and Ariba.
Prior to joining Smith Micro, Dan was Vice President and General Manager of Oracle’s Enterprise Risk Management applications portfolio, where he was responsible for go-to-market strategy and revenue generation across North America, following Oracle’s acquisition of LogicalApps in early 2008. As Executive Vice President of Worldwide Sales and Field Operations at LogicalApps, he was responsible for all market-facing organizations, revenue streams, and customer support functions. Prior to joining Logical Apps, Dan served as Executive Vice President of Worldwide Sales and Marketing for Perfect Commerce, Senior Vice President of Global Sales and Marketing at KhiMetrics Software, and President/CEO of SourcingLink, Inc. Dan holds a B.A. from Azusa Pacific University.
Andrew C. Schmidt
Chief Financial Officer
Andy is the Chief Financial Officer. He joined Smith Micro in June 2005. Prior to joining Smith Micro, Andy was the Chief Financial Officer of Genius Products, Inc., a publicly traded entertainment company, since August 2004. From April 2003 to June 2004, he was Vice President (Finance) and acting Chief Accounting Officer of Peregrine Systems, Inc., a publicly held provider of enterprise level software (then in chapter 11 reorganization). From July 2000 to January 2003, Andy was Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Mad Catz Interactive, Inc., a publicly traded provider of console video game accessories. He holds a B.B.A. from the University of Texas and an M.S. in Accountancy from San Diego State University.
David P. Sperling
Chief Technology Officer
Dave is the Chief Technology Officer. He joined Smith Micro in April 1989 and has been the Company's Director of Software Engineering since April 1992. He assumed his current position in September 1999. Dave began his professional career as a software engineer at Smith Micro and currently has two issued and seven patents pending for various telephony and Internet technologies. He holds a B.S. degree in Computer Science and an MBA from the University of California, Irvine.
