Patented Technology Enables Smith Micro Products to Detect and Re-Compress Compressed Data Streams Embedded Inside Unknown or Generic File Formats
ALISO VIEJO, CA - Smith Micro Software, Inc. (NASDAQ:SMSI), a leading developer and marketer of mobility solutions and services for the wireless market, today announced it has received a grant from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for a patent on the "Detection and Recompression of Embedded Compressed Data Inside Existing Data Streams." This patent, USPTO #7,397,959, helps to boost Smith Micro's StuffIt product line by enabling previously impossible compression of data and files, which include embedded compressed data.
This patented technology generally relates to data compression and decompression, file archiving, and streaming compression. Specifically, it relates to a system and method for the detection and subsequent compression and decompression of files, and data that include embedded data and files that have previously been compressed. In particular, the technology includes the detection and compression of previously compressed data that resides in data or files of an unknown data or file format.
"Smith Micro continues its advances in the data compression field with this new patent grant," said David Sperling, CTO for Smith Micro. "This patent enables compression of data that was previously known as 'impossible' to compress. When used in combination with Smith Micro's other patented and patent-pending technologies, Smith Micro's StuffIt product line provides users with the best possible compression, saving users and corporations significant transmission time and space-savings on any platform - from servers to PCs to handheld devices."
