Smith Micro Software Inc. Internet Solutions Division Completes Windows 2000 Consulting Project for College

Apr 02, 2001
Multi-Campus Migration Strategy Includes Windows 2000 Active Directory and Exchange 2000 Infrastructure Design

ALISO VIEJO, CA - Smith Micro Software, Inc. (Nasdaq: SMSI), a developer and marketer of a wide range of software and professional service solutions for the wireless and Internet markets, today announced that its Internet Solutions Division completed a consulting contract for Kern County Community College. The contract was designed to assist California's multi-campus Kern County Community College District in migrating from a Unix-based email system to Microsoft Exchange 2000. The project centered around creation of an architecture for the Windows 2000 Active Directory, the enterprise directory service at the heart of Exchange 2000 that makes it possible to have a single point of management for all users, email and mailbox information, and other messaging and network resources in a distributed computing environment.

Smith Micro analyzed the network infrastructure that serves the district's administrative offices, three colleges and four community education extensions and then developed a detailed design for the Active Directory. The company designed a structure for each component of the directory service, the server configurations required to deploy the system, and other implementation strategies. The design also offered a step-by-step plan for migrating to Exchange 2000 in order to give the college's administrators, faculty and staff members access to productivity-enhancing features such as shared calendaring, email synchronization and mandatory email receipt confirmations.

The consulting project was completed on an aggressive one-month timetable.

"Smith Micro's assistance not only gave us a solid direction for the design of this project but also saved us an enormous amount of time," said Eddie Alvarado, Systems Administration Manager for the Kern County Community College District. "It would have taken us anywhere from six months to a year to develop a plan for implementing Exchange 2000 if we had to do it internally, simply because we are involved in so many other projects, and Smith Micro's knowledge of the platform and of Active Directory made it happen in just over four weeks. We expect we'll be able to roll out the system and let our users take advantage of it by next fall."

"Any company or organization with multiple locations that is migrating to the Windows 2000 operating system, or other components of the Microsoft Office 2000 suite that integrate with the Active Directory service, needs a blueprint for building the enterprise directory," said Chris Lippincott, General Manager of the Internet Solutions Division of Smith Micro Software. "As this project for Kern County Community College District demonstrates, we believe a consultant with the proper expertise can dramatically accelerate the implementation process."
