Smith Micro's Internet Solutions Division Unveils, University of Kansas Athletics Department's New e-Store

Sep 14, 2000
Adding 24 x 7 x 365 Online Availability to Game Day Sales Is Expected to Boost Revenues

Aliso Viejo, CA - The Internet Solutions Division of Smith Micro Software, Inc. (Nasdaq: SMSI), a developer and marketer of a wide range of software and service solutions for the Internet market, today announced the launch of, an e-Store built by its consulting arm for the University of Kansas Athletics Department.

Located at, the new store enables the department to expand the availability of its licensed merchandise from the university's sports arenas, which capture business at only a few dozen home athletic events every year, to a web site that is "open" on a 24 x 7 x 365 basis. All proceeds will directly benefit intercollegiate athletics at the university, including scholarships for student athletes.

The site's interface and advanced eCommerce functionality were built with WebCatalog 4.0, the newest edition of Smith Micro's widely used eCommerce and Web publishing platform. Smith Micro also equipped the site with a Microsoft SQL Server-based back-end to maintain customer order histories, support the future addition of online ticket sales, and easily integrate into other information services at KU.

Smith Micro's work will enable repeat customers to place new orders without re-entering all their personal information, offer customers the option to hold available items until back-ordered items are shipped, and give the KU Athletics Department the ability to build marketing campaigns around customers' past ordering patterns. These and other advanced capabilities, usually expensive to implement, were developed at low cost with WebCatalog.

" is our first venture into eCommerce and a key component of a new initiative designed to increase the revenues we generate from merchandise sales," said Pat Warren, Assistant Athletic Director at the University of Kansas. "Smith Micro worked closely with our information systems department to build the site to our specifications, and they have played a vital role in arming us with the tools we need to make the store a success."

The site is being heavily promoted in the university's sports arenas, on its national radio and television networks, and on the Athletics Department web site ( Arena promotions include frequent mentions on the video board on game days. sells hundreds of licensed items, ranging from t-shirts, hats and jerseys to an autographed copy of a book about the career of former Jayhawks basketball player and team co-captain Jerod Haase. Coffee mugs, golf ball, license plate holders and other collectibles with KU logos will be added over the next few months. The site also sells gift certificates and is equipped to accept coupons that will be issued under a new program that will be launched later this year.

In the future, is expected to sell event tickets and accept charitable contributions online. Long-range plans also call for the addition of an advanced inventory management system that will enable sales from both the web site and the university's sports arenas to be automatically deducted from inventory in real time. This will help ensure that the athletic department will be able to fulfill orders for merchandise sold online on game days, when game-related radio and TV broadcasts are expected to generate peak sales by actively promoting the site.

"The project demonstrates both the versatility of our WebCatalog product and the capabilities of our consulting staff," said Chris Lippincott, General Manager of the Internet Solutions Division of Smith Micro Software. "We worked side by side with KU personnel to identify and fulfill their technical needs, and the result is a showcase site that seeks to deliver extraordinary functionality at relatively low cost."
