Smith Micro's WebCatalog 4.0 Earns Accolades From InfoWorld

Jul 24, 2000
A Very Good Choice for Midsize Businesses Needing Quick E-Commerce Deployment

Aliso Viejo, CA - The Internet Solutions Division of Smith Micro Software, Inc., a developer and marketer of a wide range of software and service solutions for the Internet market, has received a favorable review in InfoWorld for WebCatalog 4.0, the newest edition of its platform for quickly creating and administering online stores.

"WebCatalog stands out as a very good choice for midsize businesses needing quick eCommerce deployment without using valuable IT resources," reviewer Mike Heck wrote in the magazine's July 10 edition. "Its use will allow any business to quickly begin selling via the Internet, without investing excessive time and money."

Heck awarded Version 4.0 a "very good" ranking on InfoWorld's quality meter, the equivalent of a four-star rating. He commended the product for its pre-designed StoreBuilder page layouts, automatic WAP-enabling capability for the emerging wireless market, suitability for novice users, and customizability for advanced users.

The review also singled out WebCatalog's ability to rapidly generate Dynamic HTML pages, integrated order management capabilities, built-in product indexing for quick searches, and customer relationship-building features such as the ability to target future product offerings to customers' preferences. Heck called WebCatalog "a very good solution with extensive functions" for its $3,495 price tag.

"Receiving such a positive evaluation from an influential publication like InfoWorld demonstrates that WebCatalog fills a strong need in the marketplace," said Chris Lippincott, General Manager of the Internet Solutions Division of Smith Micro Software. "The review mentioned WebCatalog in comparison with higher-priced products, reinforcing our belief that we are a major player and good value in the eCommerce and Web publishing platform space."

WebCatalog enables users to create an unlimited number of eCommerce storefronts equipped with back-office order management/payment authorization support, eliminating the need to purchase multiple licenses.

In addition to quickly setting up shopping cart functionality, the new version's expanded StoreBuilder Wizard enables users to instantly upload graphics, edit product placement, change pricing information, add product options such as size and color, alter the look and feel of a store, select payment processors and more -- all from a browser. Novices can build online stores with no programming, and more experienced designers use the free extensions offered for Macromedia's Dreamweaver HTML Editor to ease custom development of more complex sites.

WebCatalog can be used with Windows 95/98/2000, Window NT, Mac OS, Solaris 2.6, Red Hat Linux 6.0 or 6.1, and Cobalt RaQ3i.
