Inventory Will Be Integrated with Arena Sales; Customer Tracking System To Be Included
Aliso Viejo, CA - The Internet Solutions Division of Smith Micro Software, Inc. (Nasdaq: SMSI), a worldwide developer and marketer of Internet communications software, today announced an agreement to develop a state-of-the-art e-store, real-time inventory management program and customer tracking system for the University of Kansas Athletic Department.
Scheduled to go live at http://www.kuathletics.com before the football season opens in September, the new store will initially sell licensed merchandise, specialty items and gift certificates online and eventually expand to sell event tickets. It is part of a new initiative designed to increase the revenue raised for student athlete scholarships by bringing sales directly under the umbrella of the athletic department.
An advanced inventory management system to be built by Smith Micro's consulting arm is expected to enable sales from both the web site and the university's sports arenas to be automatically deducted from inventory in real time. This is anticipated to help the athletic department fulfill orders for merchandise sold online on game days, when game-related radio and TV broadcasts are expected to generate peak sales by actively promoting the site. Store inventory will be entered through bar code scanning, eliminating the need to input the information manually.
The site will also provide an extensive customer database indicating past purchase amounts, donor activity, sport preferences and other detailed information about online patrons. The company anticipates that this data will enable the athletic department to offer discounts to preferred customers, alert select patrons about upcoming specials, and create e-mail marketing campaigns based on the information.
The site's eCommerce functionality will be built with Smith Micro's WebCatalog 4.0, the newest edition of the company's popular eCommerce and Web publishing platform.
"The athletic department has a good presence on UK's informational web site, but eCommerce is really a new area for us, and we needed a strong partner to help us get from the drawing board to deployment," said Pat Warren, Assistant Athletic Director. "We selected Smith Micro because they were able not only to meet our customization needs, but also help us work through the complex logistics of essentially creating an entire e-store from scratch."
"The Kansas University project really shows the wide-ranging expertise of our consulting staff," said Chris Lippincott, General Manager of the Internet Solutions Division of Smith Micro Software. "This was not just a case of building a web site, but also fulfilling a variety of other technical needs as well as guiding the client through the process. This ability to both advise and fulfill can play a critical role in a project's success."
