System Will Showcase Wireless WebDNA, Allowing eShopping over Internet Phones
Aliso Viejo, CA - The Internet Solutions Division of Smith Micro Software, Inc. (Nasdaq: SMSI), a leading developer and marketer of a wide range of software and service solutions for the Internet market, today announced an agreement to develop a wireless eCommerce solution for the Pillsbury Doughboy™ Shop (http://www.doughboyshop.com), the Web's leading source of Pillsbury Doughboy collectibles. Using Smith Micro's new Wireless WebDNA technology announced last week, the Internet Solutions Division's consulting arm will expand the Pillsbury Doughboy Shop's eCommerce capabilities to permit its customers to purchase and pay for Pillsbury Doughboy merchandise over wireless Internet phones. The system is expected to go live by April 1, 2000.
The agreement will make the Pillsbury Doughboy Shop one of the first eStores to take advantage of the emerging market for wireless eCommerce. Visitors using a wireless Internet browser will be able to see abbreviated, yet full-featured, storefront pages dynamically created using Smith Micro's Wireless WebDNA technology. Shopping will be a quick four-step process that utilizes familiar shopping cart functionality and a secure SSL connection for shipping and credit card information.
Wireless shoppers will be able to access the Pillsbury Doughboy Shop site through the same URL as PC customers. "This is a key advantage over other solutions in the marketplace that stems from the ability of Smith Micro's technology to "sense" the type of browser accessing the site and serve up pages accordingly," said Chris Lippincott General Manager of the Internet Solutions Division.
Customer information that is already stored on the Pillsbury Doughboy Shop's website will be accessible to customers by simply typing a short identification number, eliminating the need for repeat customers to re-enter their personal information.
The new system will give existing Pillsbury Doughboy Shop customers an additional way to shop through the site, and it will also open the door to new customers who prefer the wireless channel.
"We believe that Smith Micro will enable us to be at the forefront of wireless eCommerce, and its Wireless WebDNA technology gives us significant time-to-market and easy-access advantages," said Mike Lundeby, President of Creative Resource Center, a Minneapolis marketing agency that runs the Pillsbury Doughboy Shop. "We'll be up and running in a matter of weeks rather than months, and we will incur no additional marketing costs because we will not have to use different Web addresses for our PC and wireless customers. These are very attractive benefits."
"Industry projections indicate a coming expansion for wireless Internet phones, and we expect wireless eCommerce to be one powerful byproduct," said Mr. Lippincott. "With its strong brand recognition, Pillsbury Doughboy Shop will be an ideal showcase for this new technology in general and for Smith Micro's solution in particular."
