Smith Micro's Internet Solutions Division Introduces New Wireless eCommerce Solution

Mar 08, 2000
Wireless WebDNA Taps Emerging Market for Wireless Internet Phones

Aliso Viejo, CA - The Internet Solutions Division of Smith Micro Software, Inc. (Nasdaq: SMSI) today announced the introduction of Wireless WebDNA. Wireless WebDNA taps into the emerging market for wireless Internet phones, allowing users to access and shop eCommerce sites with their phones. Leveraging Smith Micro's existing eCommerce web site and software development expertise, sites can be Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) enabled today. Smith Micro also announced that Wireless WebDNA will be part of the company's upcoming release of WebCatalog 4.0, Smith Micro's eCommerce toolkit. Owners of existing websites, regardless of the software powering the site, can take advantage of Wireless WebDNA using Smith Micro's consulting services to integrate WAP support on their current site.

Internet ready wireless device use is growing, and when combined with Smith Micro's new Wireless WebDNA, businesses are given an opportunity to enhance service for their existing customers while attracting new customers. Web sites built with WebCatalog's powerful store creation wizard not only allow standard web access, but also automatically provide a customized wireless access point tailored to the special needs of wireless phone consumers.

WebCatalog's support for WAP is provided through dynamically created storefront pages using the Handheld Device Markup Language (HDML). Visitors using a wireless Internet browser see an abbreviated, yet full-featured, storefront. Product listings allow consumers to shop and quickly add one or more items to a shopping cart. When a consumer is ready to purchase, access switches to a secure SSL connection where the consumer enters their shipping address and credit card information. Because entering data on many devices can be cumbersome, by simply typing a short identification number, the customer information that is already entered through the standard website can be accessed. After the purchase, an order number is displayed, and optionally, the phone user may check the status of the purchase to see if it was approved.

"More intriguing than expanding the customer access, is the integrated administration access for website owners who find themselves away from the office with an urgent need to update information," said Chris Lippincott, General Manager of the Internet Solutions Division of Smith Micro Software. "An administrator can log in to a password protected area, from their wireless phone, and with a few quick clicks, change product prices or update product visibility. This is critical to the time sensitive nature of eBusiness today."

"We pride ourselves on identifying synergies and fully integrating core technologies throughout all of our Divisions," said William W. Smith, Jr., President and CEO of Smith Micro. "The recent introduction of our Wireless and Broadband Division, and new product announcements that will follow, clearly demonstrate that we consider wireless support a core technology. In the case of our WAP solution, our Wireless and Broadband Division supports the user side while the server side is supported through our Internet Solutions Division."

Wireless Internet phone users can view a demonstration of this technology on the Smith Micro web site by going to Visitors can even purchase an inexpensive product during the demonstration to complete the entire process.
