Comcast Case Study: Simpler, Smarter, Safer Wi-Fi Access using Policy-on-Device Management and Analytics
As demand for mobile internet access grows, Wi-Fi has become a critical strategic investment for both wireless and cable network providers.
Despite aggressive deployment of hotspots, Wi-Fi usage still has a number of challenges, including discovery of appropriate access points, secure login, connection quality, congestion, and seamless transitions between networks.
In order to maximize adoption and retain customers, network providers must ensure Wi-Fi Quality of Service (QoS) is high, and users can easily find and securely access provider hotspots.
Working with Smith Micro Software, Comcast has enhanced their XFINITY WiFi® application to simplify and enhance user access to Comcast hotspots nationwide.
Available for Android, iOS, PC and Mac platforms, the app improves Wi-Fi discovery by using geo-fence technology to identify and promote Comcast access points. Automated authentication and connection management features provide users with safe, seamless access to hotspots including private, public secure, or public open hotspots.
Embedded policy controls allow Comcast to prioritize access points based on Quality of Service (QoS) metrics, including connect and disconnect performance thresholds, helping to improve network performance for Comcast customers, and facilitating network planning.
