Smith Micro Launches StuffIt Expander For Windows

Aug 28, 2007
Provides Windows Vista, XP, and 2000 users with free access to StuffIt X and Zip Archives

ALISO VIEJO, CA - Smith Micro Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: SMSI), a leading provider of software and services for the wireless and consumer marketplace, today released StuffIt Expander® for Windows, a free companion product to its popular StuffIt Deluxe® archive and compression software. Available as a free download, StuffIt Expander allows users to open archives compressed in Smith Micro's StuffIt X format. StuffIt Expander also supports archives compressed using the legacy Zip compression method.

The new free download allows users to browse the contents of StuffIt X and Zip archives, providing the ability to select which files are extracted. In addition, StuffIt X archives containing JPEG images can be viewed in a special "thumbnail" mode, allowing users to preview their pictures before expanding.

StuffIt Expander forms part of Smith Micro's complete line up of award winning compression products that also includes StuffIt Deluxe, and StuffIt Standard Edition. Offering support for additional file formats, such as RAR, TAR, CAB, and more, StuffIt Deluxe also features the ability to compress archives using Smith Micro's StuffIt technology. The StuffIt X file format includes exclusive technology that allows Microsoft Office 2007 documents (including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) to be compressed more efficient than ever before, and also allows JPEG images to be compressed between 20 and 30 percent with no loss of image quality. Furthermore, Smith Micro places a continued emphasis on security, adding support for creating Zip and StuffIt X archives with 256-bit AES encryption.

"The release of the new version of StuffIt Expander for Windows provides an important service to those who have invested in StuffIt and StuffIt Wireless technology," said Matthew Covington, Director of Compression Solutions.
