Dobson to Use Smith Micro Technology for High-Speed EDGE-Compatible PC Data Cards and Mobile Phones
ALISO VIEJO, CA - Smith Micro Software Inc. (NASDAQ: SMSI), a developer and marketer of software for the wireless market, announced that Dobson Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: DCEL), a leading provider of wireless phone services to rural and suburban markets operating under the Cellular One brand name, has chosen Smith Micro to supply its communication software.
According to a multi-year contract, Smith Micro will build Dobson's data connectivity kits, which include QuickLink Mobile (with 802.11/Wi-Fi) and QuickLink Mobile Phonebook software. The data connectivity kits support GPRS/EDGE handsets and WWAN PC Cards offered by Dobson.
QuickLink Mobile, Smith Micro's leading data connectivity product, will give Dobson's customers convenient and versatile access to the Internet on its GPRS/EDGE network via a mobile phone or WWAN PC Card. With QuickLink Mobile, customers can access email, upload/download files, and surf websites when they are away from their home or office. In addition, users can easily and seamlessly roam between the GPRS/EDGE network and Wi-Fi hotspots. Users can manage both their GPRS/EDGE WWAN connection through a tethered mobile phone or a WWAN PC Card and Wi-Fi connections using a Wi-Fi PC Card or built-in Wi-Fi supported notebook that is enabled with QuickLink Mobile.
QuickLink Mobile Phonebook will allow Dobson's customers to transfer their mobile phone phonebook information to and from any PC, making additions or edits to personal or business phone lists easier and faster.
"Smith Micro is excited about this new agreement with Dobson," said William W. Smith, Jr., President and Chief Executive Officer of Smith Micro. "With QuickLink Mobile, Dobson customers will be able to leverage the full potential of their high-speed network and surrounding Wi-Fi hotspots, sending and receiving data while away from your landline connection at the office or at home."
QuickLink Mobile, the most popular data connectivity solution in the industry, offers a number of convenient features to enhance productivity and simplify Internet use wirelessly. Among the product's most valuable advantages is a powerful installation wizard that lets users load the software and configure the wireless hookup in minutes by auto-detecting the type of mobile phone and configuring the computer system appropriately. Other notable features of QuickLink Mobile include a Digital Dashboard that not only displays battery levels on the mobile phone but also the signal strength of the connection via the mobile phone or WWAN PC Card that allows the customer to manage their wireless connection.
