Smith Micro and ipUnplugged Announce Alliance to Further Wireless, Wi-Fi Roaming Capabilities

Aug 26, 2003
Joint Marketing/Technology Agreement to Increase Performance and Security for Wi-Fi Users

Aliso Viejo, CA - Smith Micro Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: SMSI), a developer and marketer of a wide range of software and service solutions for the wireless market, and Swedish Mobile IP vendor, ipUnplugged, today announced a joint program aimed at improving Wi-Fi performance for potentially millions of mobile PC users around the world. The alliance, which includes mutual marketing and technology support, will offer notebook or PDA users seamless, transparent, and secure roaming capability across wireless and even wired networks-but especially between Wi-Fi "hot spots" in offices, businesses, airports, and other public areas and WWAN networks such as 1xRTT and GPRS.

Central to the relationship is the assurance of compatibility between the companies' two leading roaming products for notebooks and PDAs: QuickLink® Mobile Wi-Fi, Smith Micro's Wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN) and Wi-Fi connectivity software; and ipUnplugged's Roaming Gateway and Roaming Client products, which enable users to roam securely and seamlessly from one network to another. ipUnplugged's products will allow QuickLink Mobile Wi-Fi users to move from one hot spot to another without interrupting the user's session; QuickLink Mobile Wi-Fi extends the list of ipUnplugged's possible connectivity sources from public and private LANs, WANs, and cellular networks to include Wi-Fi connection.

"ipUnplugged's Mobile IP technology allows users to retain their session IP address as they move from one connectivity source to another. For people on the move, on college or office campuses for example, this is a huge advantage," said William W. Smith, Jr., President and Chief Executive Officer of Smith Micro. "ipUnplugged's IPSec security layer also provides encrypted communication regardless of the access point or network card in use, thus ensuring the privacy so important to people and enterprises."

"Our Mobile IP client and technology will add a new dimension of flexibility and convenience to Smith Micro's QuickLink Mobile connection manager," said Lars Boman, Chief Executive Officer for ipUnplugged. "We believe our combined solution will have a great appeal to operators and service providers offering combined Wi-Fi, and WWAN services."

As part of the agreement, the two companies have also pledged to support each other's marketing efforts in Europe, Asia, and the United States. ipUnplugged, based in Stockholm, has strong customer relationships on its side of the Atlantic, while Smith Micro has developed key OEM accounts in the U.S.
