Smith Micro Announces Wireless Connectivity Software for Exploding Wi-Fi Market

Mar 17, 2003
Company Plans to Include 802.11 Technology into its QuickLink Products

NEW ORLEANS, LA-CTIA 2003 - The Wireless Broadband Division of Smith Micro Software Inc., (NASDAQ: SMSI), a developer and marketer of a wide range of software for the wireless market, today announced its latest additions to the QuickLink® family, namely Windows software solutions that take advantage of the exploding demand for Wi-Fi services. QuickLink® Mobile Wi-Fi provides notebook users with the ability to easily roam between wireless wide area networks (WWAN) and Wi-Fi hot spots. QuickLink® Wi-Fi allows users to seek out and select available hot spots in their area.

QuickLink Mobile, which has been available from Smith Micro for more than two years, is the most popular data connectivity solution in the industry. It offers anytime access to email, file uploads/downloads, web surfing and corporate Intranets without being plugged into a network or landline modem connection. The solution includes installation assistance that automatically detects the mobile phone and carrier, setting up the account in minutes. QuickLink Mobile also provides user information for web browsing efficiency via the use of a "digital dashboard" to launch a connection and displays signal strength and mobile phone battery status to ensure reliable performance.

The new QuickLink Mobile Wi-Fi gives notebook users the added benefits of managing both their WWAN connection-whether that be a 1x RTT, GPRS or iDEN connection-and Wi-Fi connections from the same application with the ability to easily roam between the two types of networks. Wi-Fi technology, designed to let users surf the Internet at speeds of up to 11 Mbps, is quickly growing in hot spot locations such as coffee houses, airports and hotels.

"Wi-Fi hot spots are giving end users a taste of high-speed wireless Internet access in a local area network environment," said Rick Wyand, general manager of the Wireless & Broadband Division of Smith Micro. "Smith Micro is allowing wireless users to take advantage of the Wi-Fi revolution by giving them a choice to connect to hot spots in a fixed environment and to WWANs in a mobile environment, providing Internet access everywhere."

QuickLink Wi-Fi allows Wi-Fi users to seek and select hot spots in a given area through a displayed list of available networks. QuickLink Wi-Fi is the ideal software solution for wireless PC card manufacturers, notebook manufacturers, Internet service providers (ISPs), WISPs, Wi-Fi aggregators and Wi-Fi network operators because it supports the popular 802.11b PC cards and Wi-Fi-enabled notebooks. The solution allows users to manage all of their hot spot accounts, including free and account connections, with one application.

After a customization fee for network specific requirements, with QuickLink Mobile Wi-Fi and QuickLink Wi-Fi, OEM's can offer their customers a consistent user interface that is compatible with the popular 802.11b PC cards, Wi-Fi-enabled notebooks, 1xRTT and GPRS handsets, and PC cards.

Both products will provide a single application for all hardware and Windows versions 98SE/ME/2000/XP. They simplify customer service and support. Both can be significantly customized for specific service offerings.

The solution allows users to manage all of their hot spot accounts, including free and subscription based connections, as well as home and office connections, all with one application.

Smith Micro is attending the CTIA show in New Orleans, May 17 through March 19 and will demonstrate QuickLink Mobile Wi-Fi at booth 4775 along with many of its other wireless products.
