New Version of QuickLink® Mobile Will Enable Mobile Notebook PC Users to Access Internet Via Verizon Wireless' Express Network (1xRTT) Capable Mobile Phones
ALISO VIEJO, CA -- The Wireless & Broadband Division of Smith Micro Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: SMSI), a developer and marketer of a wide range of software for the wireless market, announced today that it has been chosen by Verizon Wireless, the nation's largest wireless carrier, to build a data cable connectivity solution for the Verizon Wireless Express Network, Verizon Wireless' next-generation 1xRTT high-speed wireless data network. The solution is based on Smith Micro's QuickLink® Mobile software technology that enables mobile notebook PC users to access the Internet via their Express Network data capable mobile phones at speeds up to 144 kilobits per second.
1xRTT is a network infrastructure technology that will significantly increase the voice and data capacity of Verizon Wireless' premier wireless network. Verizon Wireless already markets QuickLink Mobile under the Mobile Office brand name for its existing data cable connectivity solutions. Verizon Wireless and Smith Micro first announced a relationship to jointly develop wireless data solutions in March of 2001. Mobile Office, the first product to be developed by the two companies, was introduced last year and consumer interest in Verizon Wireless data cable connectivity has been increasing ever since. This version of Mobile Office enables Verizon Wireless customers to connect their Express Network data-capable digital phone to a notebook PC, providing instant wireless access to Web sites and email at faster speeds. The new version of Mobile Office developed by Smith Micro for the Express Network is also compatible with non-1xRTT Verizon Wireless networks.
"Smith Micro is excited to be working with Verizon Wireless in this new generation of high-speed wireless communications," said William W. Smith, Jr., President and Chief Executive Officer of Smith Micro. "We look forward to offering Verizon Wireless users a significant increase in mobile notebook PC performance and utility, and to increasing our market penetration with Verizon Wireless users as the Express Network rolls out today."
"Smith Micro has proven itself with Mobile Office, which gave us confidence as we looked toward fulfilling the data cable connectivity requirements of the Express Network," said Jim Straight, Vice President, Wireless Data and Internet, Verizon Wireless. "Faster Internet access is a critical application and one that will significantly drive ultimate demand for this technology. We believe Smith Micro will be able to furnish this capability for us and for our millions of customers across the U.S."
Smith Micro's new data cable connectivity software for the Verizon Wireless Express Network features many of QuickLink Mobile's most convenient features, including a Digital Dashboard that shows battery status and signal strength, an account reconciliation feature that maintains records of Internet sessions, and an installation program that helps users get connected to the Web in minutes. It also incorporates Fourelle Systems Inc.'s Venturi compression software for improved performance. Verizon Wireless will continue to market this new version of QuickLink Mobile under the Mobile Office brand name.
