Smith Micro's Internet Solutions Division Wins Web Project for Harman Multimedia

Aug 22, 2001
Contract Includes New eCommerce Site, Connectivity to Multiple External Databases

ALISO VIEJO, CA -- The Internet Solutions Division of Smith Micro Software, Inc. (Nasdaq: SMSI), a developer and marketer of a wide range of software and service solutions for the wireless and Internet markets, today announced a contract to build and host a full-featured eCommerce web site for Harman Multimedia, a California-based provider of audio products for personal computers. In addition to extensive site work, the project involves database development and several integration activities to connect Harman's eCommerce operation to external fulfillment and shipping providers.

The contract calls for Smith Micro to build a SQL Server back end that will house all the product information to be displayed on the site, customer account information, online product registrations and various other databases. Harman has also asked Smith Micro to create a mechanism enabling orders and order confirmations to be electronically exchanged with Harman's third-party fulfillment house several times a day; construct an inventory update system that will allow shoppers to check the availability of the item they wish to order while online; and link to part of the UPS World Ship application so customers can check the shipping status of their orders without leaving the Harman site. Smith Micro will host the site from its network operations center in San Diego.

For Harman Multimedia, the project is part of a strategic expansion into the retail channel. Traditionally, the multimedia division of Harman International functioned exclusively as an OEM supplier of branded and unbranded audio solutions to major computer manufacturers. The division established retail shelf distribution last year to broaden its base and is now adding online sales in a continuing effort to build its retail presence.

Smith Micro won the contract both because of its experience on similar projects and because of the features offered by its WebCatalogTM eCommerce and web-publishing platform, which is being used to build and power the site. WebCatalog offers integrated order management as well as functionality that will enable Harman's in-house staff to add, remove, reprice and recategorize the products in its online store and make other basic site updates without programming. The goal is to reduce ongoing costs by eliminating the need to engage outside contractors for normal site maintenance.

"This project demonstrates how the versatility of WebCatalog, the engineering expertise of our technology consulting practice, and the capabilities of our hosting service combine to give customers a complete solution for their eBusiness needs," said Chris Lippincott, General Manager of the Internet Solutions Division of Smith Micro Software. "For customers like Harman Multimedia, this end-to-end support substantially simplifies the process of deploying online storefronts to open or expand existing sales channels."

We believe building a website with WebCatalog will also speed development and simplify management. With WebCatalog, an unlimited number of storefronts can be built directly from a browser, including uploading of product graphics, using the StoreBuilder Wizard. Free extensions to Macromedia's Dreamweaver are included to facilitate custom development of more complex sites. Legacy accounting systems and other external systems can be integrated through WebCatalog's support for ODBC and SQL. Integrated order management streamlines administration. Sites developed with WebCatalog can operate on Windows, Macintosh and UNIX servers.
