Consulting Division Selected To Build Robust eCommerce System for Paperless Book Store
ALISO VIEJO, CA - The Internet Solutions Division of Smith Micro Software, Inc. (Nasdaq: SMSI), a developer and marketer of a wide range of software and service solutions for the Internet market, today announced that its consulting arm has been selected to build the back-end functionality for eBookHome.com, one of the first online bookstores dedicated exclusively to the sale of paperless books.
Located at http://www.eBookHome.com, the new eBookstore is expected to debut in October with hundreds of titles that can be immediately downloaded to the customer's computer, handheld device or dedicated eBook reading appliance. Offerings will range from business, computer, travel and reference books to fiction, science fiction and poetry, including titles that are available only in eBook format as well as those simultaneously published in hardcover. The site will also sell Palm™ PDAs and Pocket PCs at launch and eBook reading devices within a few months; publish author interviews; and offer news updates on the eBook industry.
Smith Micro is building a state-of-the-art website featuring shopping cart, search functions and other back-end functionality created with WebCatalog 4.0, the newest edition of its widely used eCommerce and Web publishing platform. Digital Carpenters, a Web development company based in San Diego, is designing the front end.
Smith Micro was selected to participate in the project primarily because of its track record in developing eCommerce sites tailored to a wide variety of needs, the company's reputation for on-time delivery, and the speed of WebCatalog's unique RAM-based page generation system.
"Our mission is to create a site that will be as comfortable and inviting for those who choose to purchase books in digital form as an independent real-world bookstore is today for books printed on paper," said Pat Thompson, President of eBookHome.com. "Smith Micro is making a major contribution by providing us with fast on-the-fly page generation, a robust search engine, an easy-to-use shopping cart and other back-end functionality. Their technical capabilities and their fast turnaround have been important assets as we ramp up to launch."
Major technology companies, publishers and even authors are putting their muscle behind the eBook industry, driven by potential advantages such as the ability to speed book distribution and enable readers to store many books on one small device. eBook reading devices even allow users to instantly search an entire book for a desired phrase or page, highlight text, bookmark passages and write in the margins, both replicating and enhancing the paper-based reading experience.
"eBookHome.com is getting in on the ground floor of a market that may change the way we read, and that has made it particularly exciting to work on this project," said Chris Lippincott, General Manager of the Internet Solutions Division of Smith Micro Software. "The fact that Smith Micro was selected to build the back-end we believe to be another indication of our reputation for quality engineering, on-time results and outstanding eCommerce technology."
eBookHome.com is an independent retailer of electronic books and reading devices. The company's web site will debut in October athttp://www.eBookHome.com.
