The patent application was initially filed with the United States Patent Office in November 1998.
The filing relates to techniques, algorithms and software developed by Smith Micro Software for motion-triggered alarms. In summary, the patent application covers a video processing module running on a computer system that employs algorithms to detect and quantify movement either locally or remotely over the Internet and executes tasks based upon the algorithm output including but not limited to generating alarms that can be sent over the Internet.
Smith Micro Software believes technology is a core competency and has history of protecting technology assets. The company currently has other patent applications in process as well and was recently awarded Patent No. 6,014,689 for a video email system.
