Philips Unit Bundling Smith Micro's VideoLink Products with New Philips USB Video Camera
ALISO VIEJO, CA - Smith Micro Software, Inc. (Nasdaq NMS: SMSI) today announced that Philips Consumer Electronics, a unit of Philips Electronics N.V., will purchase Smith Micro's VideoLinkTM and VideoLink Mail products and will bundle them with its new Philips USB desktop cameras. Philips camera users will be able to record and save high-resolution video images and audio messages and communicate visually in video conferencing settings and with other PC users via e-mail over the Internet and over the many corporate and government agency intranets.
Philips' new universal serial bus ("USB") camera was designed for desktop video conferencing, video-mailing, still imaging and many other imaging activities. Offering brilliant images and blazing colors, the camera provides excellent performance in business, education, R&D and personal home use applications and, with USB connectivity, just plug it into a free USB socket available on most new computers, and you're in business.
"The combination of Smith Micro's software and Philips' high-resolution USB cameras creates a fully integrated, cost-effective video conferencing and video e-mail solution that can be used by Philips' USB desktop camera users throughout the world," commented William W Smith, Jr., President and CEO of Smith Micro.
VideoLink is a video conferencing product, supporting ITU H.323 and H.324 video conferencing standards, that provides for high-quality video and audio communication over the Internet; corporate and government intranets; common telephone lines; and high-speed digital wiring ("ISDN") lines.
VideoLink utilizes advanced compression techniques to provide video conferencing at upwards of 15+ frames per second over ordinary phone lines. Performance over an IP network, whether the Internet or an intranet, can run as high as 32 frames per second, depending upon the available bandwidth. VideoLink is available in French, Italian, German, Spanish and U.K. English.
VideoLink Mail will allow Philips USB desktop camera users that are running Windows 98 to record a video and audio message, save it as a highly compressed file, and attach it to their everyday email for transmission over the Internet or intranets. This product features a 32-bit design for high-speed video and audio performance, and offers users the ability to import .AVI files. A VideoLink Mail player is included with every file, permitting anyone with e-mail access to receive the audio/video message. Advanced compression techniques enable VideoLink Mail to send a 30-second, high-quality audio and video file in less than 300K of space, including the player.
